Jin Shanbao (1895-1997)
Jin Shanbao was born in 1895 in Zhuji, Zhejiang province. He seemed to have had an inseparable bond with wheat since his youth. In 1917, he was enrolled in Nanjing Higher Normal School, majoring in agriculture. He completed his undergraduate studies in agriculture at Southeast University in June 1927.
In 1930, Jin Shanbao went to the United States to study breeding and returned to China in 1933. He taught at the College of Agriculture of both Zhejiang University and Nanjing Central University. In 1961, He edited Wheat Cultivation in China, which was the first step for the subsequent publication of domestic crop cultivation science monographs. He had been engaged in agricultural education for more than 30 years, and “patriotism” had been his belief throughout his life.
The statue of Academician Jin Shanbao is erected on the second floor of the Library of Weigang Campus. He was the founder of modern wheat science in China and made significant contributions to wheat production. He is known as the “Giant of Agronomy”, and is a monument to the development of agricultural science and education in China.
As the first dean of Nanjing Agricultural College, Jin Shanbao was full of infinite affection for his alma mater. In 1979 when NAU was reinstated from Yangzhou City to Weigang, Nanjing, he put forward valuable advice and made great contribution. The Jin Shanbao Scholarship, Jin Shanbao Academy, Jin Shanbao Experimental Class and Jin Shanbao High-end Think Tank for Agricultural Modernization established today are all the spiritual inheritance of this sage.
